Katelyn headed to the control room, stopping by her sleeping chamber on the way. Even though the sector lights were on, the doors were still shut and she had to set the little girl down to force it open. Once in the room, she laid the lifeless form on the plain cotton mattress, and exited. The control room looked like a horror scene with numerous Resurrects, paused, or bent over what they had been working on when life for them ceased. A few lay lifeless on the floor, causing her to shudder.

It was like entering a tomb.

“What we are doing is wrong.” She said out loud, but they didn’t respond. The iridescent green Serum, was visible through the glass fronted cabinet in the control room. She had half a mind to take the nearest chair, and smash the entire thing in, but she knew Lars would have her head if she did so. She’d seen Levi tremble when talking about him, how much more fearsome could the real Lars be, and how much more capable of insane acts of violence.

That thought lingered for a moment, as she thought about Levi. He hadn’t come back and had sent Lars instead? It just isn’t like him to do that. No note? No promise of return? Her thoughts flickered on his Resurrect daughter. If something happened to Levi, she resolved to take care of the girl.

She flicked the lights of the control room, but they were still down. She pulled out her communication device.

“Lars, there’s still no activity.”

“I’m still accessing the mainframe. Is the Serum safe?”

“Yes,” she replied.”

Good, I still have work to do. Can you send the coordinates for the Control room?” he asked.

“Do you mean, right this minute?”

“No, I mean when the system is back up.” He tried his best not to grow impatient with her, but the fact that she couldn’t seem to use simple common sense was going to be a constant irritation, if it kept up.

Katelyn sat on the cold floor, waiting impatiently while Lars did whatever he needed to do to bring the computers back on line. She had started to daydream, when suddenly the lights flickered, and like a scene from a horror movie, the Resurrects began moving around languidly, batting their eyelids mechanically, as if they were human. One turned its head to look at her, slowly dragging its gaze from head to toe.

“You look good, Katelyn” he said.

Katelyn burst into a fit of nervous giggles, her racing heart almost made her pass out. She was a tough woman, but she felt genuinely creeped out at the moment.

The communication device going off again, and picked it up.

“Yes?”

“Can you please send those coordinates?” his tone sharp.

“Give me just a minute, I need everything to come online and I will have those for you.” She pressed ‘end’ on her communicator.

It took him approximately five minutes from the time she called him back, before he arrived in the control room with her.

“Everyone behaving okay?” He asked.

“Far as I can tell, yes.
